About 3K Turbochargers

3K Turbochargers was founded in 1898 through the merger of three companies, then called Kühnle, Kopp & Kausch.

3k's history in turbocharger development began in 1952, when the Indianapolis-based Schwitzer Company had turbochargers developed and manufactured by KKK in Frankenthal, Germany. 3K turbochargers success continued throughout increased production reaching 300,000 turbochargers per year in 1980. From 1986 to 1990 3K Turbochargers success continued, doubling their output to 600,000 turbochargers.

The company owed its continued success to, among other things, its good relationships abroad, particularly in the USA and the USSR. During these years, KKK sold multi-stage turbines worldwide for the first time. KKK also developed auxiliary drives, which were in great demand in shipbuilding.

In 1997, BorgWarner Automotive, a leading global automotive supplier, took over the majority of the shares in KKK and brought the production area of the charging systems into the subsidiary 3K-Warner Turbosystems GmbH. The Schwitzer company, which was acquired at the same time, also became part of 3K. The production capacity in Kirchheimbolanden was increased to 1 million turbochargers per year, in 1998 to 1.5 million. In that year, the ten millionth turbocharger in the history of KKK was also produced. In 2002 the subsidiary 3K-Warner Turbosystems GmbH was renamed BorgWarner Turbo Systems GmbH.

In 2006 Siemens Energy acquired the remainder of the Kühnle, Kopp & Kausch corporation, however Borgwarner continues to produce the K-Series of turbochargers.
